Cameron Diaz is a cinematic chameleon! She’s done it all—action, comedy, drama, animation—and now, she’s Back in Action with a new movie. Released on January 17 by Netflix, Back in Action is an action-comedy about a retired CIA agent, mom, and wife who’s forced back into a top-secret mission. The result is a jet-setting, thrill-packed adventure full of danger, laughs, and twists you won’t see coming.
Directed by Seth Gordon of Horrible Bosses and Four Christmases fame, the film blends tight comedy with high-energy action. Gordon co-wrote the script with Brendan O’Brien, known for Neighbors. Cameron Diaz, who gave us unforgettable roles in There’s Something About Mary and Charlie’s Angels, returns as Emily, alongside Jamie Foxx, the Oscar-winning star of Ray and fan favorites like Django Unchained and Baby Driver. They’re joined by a powerhouse cast including Andrew Scott (Sherlock), Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), and icon Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction).
According to Netflix, Back in Action reached No. 1 in 85 countries and hit the top 10 in 93, debuting with an impressive 46.8 million views.
Cameron Diaz’s return has sparked mixed reactions. Critics rated the film at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were more favorable with a 65% score. After nearly a decade away, her comeback has certainly generated buzz for sure.
In a Netflix YouTube interview, Diaz shared her surprise about returning: “I didn’t think I was gonna make another movie… and then I get a phone call from Jamie Foxx.” She added, “If there’s anyone I’d spend months on set with, laughing and having a ball, it’s Jamie.”
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Foxx convinced Diaz to step out of retirement, making this their first film together since Annie in 2014.
Back in Action isn’t just a movie; it’s a celebration of Diaz’s timeless star power. It’s a great pick for families to enjoy together and shows she’s still a top Hollywood action heroine.
