Brian Tyree Henry, voice of D-16, or Megatron, in this year’s animated feature Transformers One, has expressed interest and hope for a sequel to the film in a recent interview with Screen Rant. In the interview, he stated, “Well, you can’t have a Transformers One in the title without having a Transformers Two, you know what I mean?”
Unfortunately, there has been no confirmation from Paramount that a sequel to the film is in the works. However, Henry did show that he was excited to see what is to come for the Autobots in this universe, saying, “We still gotta see what happens with Megatron and Optimus.” Transformers One ends with the fallout of Optimus and Megatron, with the former becoming the leader of Cybertron and the latter retreating and banding together with his Decepticons.
While it is nice to hear one of its key cast members enthusiastic about a potential sequel, the future does not look bright. The film ended up grossing just shy of $130 million worldwide, making it not a breakout hit by any means. With a reported budget of $75 million, it is unlikely that the film made much of a profit at all. Still, the power of an IP is strong, and it is possible that toy sales and streaming profits turned the film into a modest success. But with animated films such as Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 lapping Transformers One in ticket sales multiple times over, it is hard not to be disappointed by the outcome.
Transformers One stars Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Steve Buscemi and Laurence Fishburne. The film tells the story of the friendship and fallout of Orion Pax (Optimus Prime) and D-16 (Megatron) as they fight to save their home world of Cybertron. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film was distributed by Paramount Pictures and is now available to stream on Paramount Plus.
