Over the years, when Ricky Gervais has not been busy hosting the Golden Globe Awards, he has been standing on the GGA stage joking about hosting them — always with a drink in hand. It therefore makes sense that the program has decided to give the tried and true comedian another go for their 73rd annual run.
Gervais is best known for being the creator of the original UK series The Office and the later US version starring Steve Carell that became Golden Globe-winning smash hit. He has a successful history of stand-up comedy and his latest project, the Netflix series Derek, has earned him both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
In the past, the Golden Globes has generally opted out of hiring a host altogether; however, beginning at the 2009 awards, Gervais became the first go-to emcee and three years later Tina Fey and Amy Poehler borrowed the title for an additional three years. The comediennes have since officially called it quits for the time being, and Gervais is now back to claim his throne.
This will be the fourth time that Gervais has hosted, and viewers can likely expect the show to be just as controversial and laugh-out-loud funny as his previous endeavors. It is likely Gervais’ unpredictability and tendency to push the comedy envelope that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to ask him back. The ability for a host to take it to the edge without going too far is typically a recipe for a ratings boost, so much so that The Academy seems to have taken notes in their decision to hire Chris Rock as the voice of their next telecast.
Commenting on Gervais’ return,the HFPA President Lorenzo Soria said in a statement: “His off-the-cuff wit and quirky charm will surely have the room and audiences around the world at the edge of their seats.”
The 73rd annual Golden Globes honoring the best in television and film from 2015 will air on January 10, 2016 at 8 PM Eastern Time on NBC.
