Disney’s Tron reboot, Tron: Ares, has kicked off its box office run with $4.8 million in previews from Thursday showings, plus early access screenings on Wednesday.
The film is all but guaranteed the number one spot on the weekend box office chart, with an estimated $40 to $45 million. The “threequel” film opens 15 years after Tron: Legacy was released in theaters by former Disney executive Sean Bailey, who spearheaded the film when serving as the head of Disney’s live-action studio. Ares currently has an audience score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the critics’ score is 86%.
Disney alum Joachim Rønning helmed the third installment of the sci-fi franchise. Jared Leto stars as the titular program, Ares, with Greta Lee portraying Eve Kim, the CEO of ENCOM, the tech corporation that’s been around since the start of the series, and Evan Peters as the villain, Julian Dillinger. The film’s net production budget is at least $180 million.
