The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the highly anticipated return of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) in the mainline franchise’s fourth and final installment, and has broken records in the process, as well as securing the first-place position at this weekend’s box office. Last Rites, directed by Michael Chaves, debuted with $83 million and marks the best opening for a film in the Conjuring franchise and the third-best opening for any horror film ever (now sitting just below 2017’s It and its 2019 sequel It: Chapter Two). The film follows the Warrens as they navigate their last and most personal case. The incredible box office performance is a win for Warner Bros. as it is their seventh consecutive project to open over $40 million. The film’s release followed its Rotten Tomatoes score debut, which is currently sitting at 56% on the tomatometer.
Coming in at second place is the theatrical re-release of the 2021 stage production Hamilton. The Lin-Manuel Miranda-helmed musical was planned to play only for a one-week limited engagement, but after raking in $10 million at the box office, it is likely that the beloved production will have its re-release adjusted to play in theatres longer. Rounding out the top three is Zach Cregger and New Line Cinema’s horror-mystery event film, Weapons. The ensemble film is finishing its summer run strong, adding just over $5 million to its total $143 million gross.
At fourth place is Disney’s Freakier Friday, the legacy sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The two stars each return for the new film, bringing other members of the original cast back with them. Freakier grossed $3.8 million this weekend at the movies. Number five goes to Darren Aronofsky’s latest, Caught Stealing, which stars Austin Butler and was released through Sony Pictures. The action film follows Aronofsky’s impressive slate of existential drama narratives such as The Whale, Mother!, and Black Swan. Caught Stealing brought home $3.2 million this weekend.
The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, takes the next slot with $3.2 million, while MCU film The Fantastic Four: First Steps holds on tight to its superpowered box office run, earning $2.7 million this weekend toward its $270 million total. Two animated films take the next two positions, with the Universal sequel The Bad Guys 2 following with $2.4 million, and the Christian movie Light of the World earning the same.
Finally, rounding out the Top 10 list is James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. The film serves as the genesis of the new DCU, led by Gunn himself as he designs a new era of superheroes. Superman added $1 million this weekend to its monumental $353 million total gross.
