With this weekend’s earnings, The Super Mario. Bros. Movie jumps its way beyond box office records by earning about $500 million domestically. Not only is it the first time an Illumination Studios film surpassed this record, but it’s also one of only nineteen films to surpass that mark domestically.
Throughout this fifth weekend, the Brooklyn plumbers collected a whopping $18.5 million from about 3,909 theaters. As these profits continue trickling in, the film manages to hold onto its spot in the top 5, coming only second to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3’s $116 million earnings. Even if it is no more extended number one at the moment, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is still considered the fifth-biggest animated feature of all time, eclipsing Toy Story 4’s $1.07 billion worldwide earnings with its own $1.15 billion worldwide box office earnings.
Opening last April, the Mario brothers have always been breezing through their box office earnings, racking up approximately $204 million in five days. It was the biggest weekend opening of the year and the highest opening ever for an animated movie. With all these earnings, the film held onto the number one box office slot for four weeks straight.
From its repeat viewings from families to brand recognition and nostalgia, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to outpace the rest of Hollywood for the foreseeable future.
