‘Expendables 4’ Flops In The Box Office While ‘Nun II’ And ‘The Haunting in Venice’ Soar – $8.4 M And $6.3 M Respectively

Expendables 4, titled Expend4bles, opened with $3.2 million on Friday, a franchise-low opening for the Expendables series. The $3.2 million tally includes $750,000 in Thursday evening previews.

With a budget of $100 million from Millenium, it is now looking at a potential severe new loss in profits; the production company had been looking to open somewhere within the $15-$17 million range for the weekend, but it’s currently on track to produce an all-time low at only $8 million.

The first three Expendables movies, released in 2010, 2012, and 2014, have grossed over $800 million globally. The Expendables 3 (2014) grossed $15.8 million during its opening weekend and made about $214 million globally.

Many attribute the subpar opening to poor reviews centering on lackluster performances and bad CGI. The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “This edition — essentially a sub-par Jason Statham vehicle (after this and Meg 2: The Trench, some quality control might be in order for the actor) featuring a brief appearance by Stallone and several new cast members who fail to make much of an impression — indicates that it’s time to put a fork in the series; it’s done.”

Meanwhile, The Nun II has grossed about $69.2 million for its domestic total while $8.4 million for the weekend, and A Haunting in Venice has touched $6.3 million for the weekend, surprising those who have predicted a far more successful run for the blockbuster franchise.
