Box Office: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Keeps Soaring At $60.5 Million While ‘Book Club 2’ Fails To Check Out At $6.5 Million

On its second weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has managed to remain victorious at the domestic box office by grossing about $60.5 million. On the other hand, Book Club: The Next Chapter has fallen behind in its earnings with a meager $6.5 million.

Not only is this weekend’s earnings impressive for this galactic squad, but the ticket drop-off between its opening and second weekends is surprisingly small for a superhero film. Guardians managed to get a 49% drop in ticket sales, which itself is impressive since the only other Marvel movies out of 30 of their features to lose this little over the weekend are Thor (47%) and Black Panther (45%). Even newer releases like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Spider-Man: No Way Home lost about 70% of their audience by the second weekend despite their strong box office openings. As this is proof that even Marvel ventures are vulnerable to box office losses, Disney has its fingers crossed that the $250 million James Gunn project will continue to earn more and go beyond breaking even.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the septuagenarian comedy feature Book Club: The Next Chapter fumbled with its meager opening of $6.5 million collected from 3,507 North American theaters. Despite the general audience interest in the first Book Club, the second film failed to capture that magic, accroding the “B” CinemaScore rating (the previous film had an “A-”). Unlike the first film’s generally high box office openings, this shockingly low opening has managed to go lower than 80 For Brady and will need a miracle to surpass its $20 million budget.
