Sony Pictures have hired sisters Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux to write script for their upcoming female 21 Jump Street reboot, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The pair pitched an idea to the studio that was well received, and they will be penning a screenplay in tandem to another script being written by Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs of Broad City. One script will be chosen from the two in a dual-track development deal.
It isn’t too surprising that Sony has chosen to keep their options wide as a lot will be riding on this film’s final product – with their recent bad press only being small contributing factor. Their Jonah Hill–Channing Tatum 21 Jump Street was huge success at the box office along with its sequel 22 Jump Street. A 23 Jump Street was greenlit by the studio almost immediately after wrapping the second film. If that isn’t enough pressure, their female reincarnation will also naturally be competing with writer-director Paul Feig‘s female Ghostbusters relaunch.
The Molyneux sisters are primarily known for their work on the animated television comedy series Bob’s Burgers which garnered them an Emmy nomination in 2013 and will soon be going into its 5th season. This could be a breakout year for the two as they have a TV movie premiering on ABC called Nerd Herd which stars Melanie Griffith (Working Girl), and a script in development at DreamWorks Animation titled Hot Stuff.
