Director Bob Persichetti was recently chosen by DreamWorks Animation to helm the Puss in Boots sequel, according to Deadline Hollywood. The announcement of the second film comes 15 years after the first Puss in Boots film- the Oscar-winning spinoff from Shrek 2- was released and made $550 million globally. It is a logical decision given that Persichetti has done extensive work with animation, and has also worked with DreamWorks in the past. Note that he was involved in the original Puss in Boots film, voicing a role and being story head for the project.
This news comes shortly after “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won the Oscar for Animated Feature on Sunday. This film was also directed by Persichetti and his co-directors, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller. The film grossed $360 million, well surpassing its budget of $90 million.
The producer for the first film in the franchise, Latifa Ouaou, will supervise the project and work with the DreamWorks Animation team. It will be interesting to see when decisions are made for who will be in the cast. The release date of the animated film remains unknown but the filming will be done in Glendale, CA, where DreamWorks is located.
