On January 6th, 2025 Bob Laemmle, an important figure in American independent cinema, passed away at the age of 89. As the co-owner of Laemmle Theaters, which is a family-operated and owned chain of art house cinemas in L.A, Laemmle was able to help in the promotion of independent and foreign films in the U.S.
Bob’s father Kurt Laemmle and his brother Max Laemmle established the chain in 1938 and became an important way to show diverse and innovative cinema. When Bob took over the chain he was able to expand its reach and operate at multiple venues across L.A. These theaters became a cultural hub by offering their audiences access to films that are not just Hollywood productions.
Bob joined the family business in 1961 and continued the work his father Kurt was doing by creating a space where diverse cinema could thrive therefore building into a cultural hub for L.A. Bob’s efforts helped many filmmakers produce independent and foreign films to have a platform that can reach Amercian audiences and therefore helping global cinema.
Bob was also a supporter of cultural and educational initiatives which was reflected in his work. His work in the family business went beyond making a profit but also gave communities in L. A space to help the community. Bob’s son who is now the CEO of the company says, “there to support the community”. After retiring in 2004 Bob still influenced the global cinema industry by working during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bob’s family expressed gratitude, as his wife, nine children, and 13 grandchildren still live, for all the tributes and support from the public and the film industry. In 2022 the documentary Only in Theaters is another legacy left by Bob Laemmle which is a testament to the importance of independent cinema and the community it continues to help. We at MXDWN send out our condolences to the family.
