After revealing the film at the San Diego Comic-Con by saying the words “McFarlane. Capullo, Batman. Spawn. December”, Todd McFarlane teases more talent brought to the movie adaptation of the Spawn comics, created by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. The writers, Joker’s Scott Silver, Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman and Matt Mixon are teaming up to write the film.
The movie was initially first announced in 2017 but has been stalled a few times. McFarlane originally wanted to be the film’s director but decided to step back from the role.
Todd McFarlane took to Instagram to announce the news.

When speaking of this he told The Hollywood Reporter, “If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers? The answer is, ‘Of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”
With this new team, the new movie will have a heftier budget and possibly a new spin.
Jamie Foxx is still set to play Spawn, while it is unknown if Jeremy Renner, who was previously attached, will still be involved in the film. Spawn is a former assassin who makes a deal with the devil after dying. He then becomes a Hellspawn, which is a force that murders evildoers on behalf of Hell.
When talking about the film, Spellman says “I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues,” says Spellman in a statement. “Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what Spawn is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”
