A mesmerizing trailer released by Bleecker Street gives a small look into Michel Franco’s newest film Sundown. Tim Roth (Lie to Me) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Melancholia) will be starring in this high society family drama and their vacation in Acapulco that will take a turn for the twisted.
After its early showing at the Venice Film Festival back in September 2021, Bleecker Street has released the final trailer to their newest film Sundown that will be coming out in theaters on January 28th. The trailer can best be described as eery and yet beautiful as the lively imagery of the film starkly contrasts with its bleak mood. Roth and Gainsbourg play Neil and Alice, a wealthy married couple on vacation in Acapulco with some younger family members. Their blissful vacation gets interrupted by the news of a distant family emergency. Tensions between the family members rise, and Neil wants to cut ties with his family while on vacation. His decisions on how to do so will have tragic consequences.
The plot is hard to decipher from the trailer fully, but it seems most intriguing as Nicholas Barber from IndieWire puts it on Rotten Tomatoes, “One of the pleasures of Sundown is that it is impossible to guess where it is heading – and it heads in some bizarre directions.” Roth’s character seems disconnected and apathetic to everything and everyone around him, no matter the beachy scenery he finds himself in, giving the film an air of decadent nouveau riche.
Written and directed by Franco, the film promises to go down some very unexpected paths as the last image of the trailer is the seawater from the beach turning red in blood.
Sundown hits cinemas on January 28th.
