If Fandango is anything to go by, Black Panther is going to have quite an opening weekend. Per Variety, the amount of presage tickets sold for the Marvel film are extending past every other 1st-quarter film purchased via Fandango. Even more impressively, it includes tickets sales documented over the past eighteen years! The online ticketing company claims that the Chadwick Boseman-starring superhero film will easily outsell previous record-holders both the live-action Beauty and the Beast and the original The Hunger Games movie, which have been recorded as big-name high-sellers for Fandango. By the time it launches on February 16th, Black Panther should also break the record for ticket presales among all superhero movies.
In support of the film, Erik Davis, who works at Fandago as the site’s managing editor, stated that, “[Black Panther]’s not just a superhero movie, it’s a ground-breaking cultural event.” He added, “It is hands-down the first major movie event of 2018, and the ecstatic reviews are fueling even greater anticipation. We’re also seeing increased interest from larger groups of ticket-buyers looking to celebrate next weekend’s historic release.”
Early tracking projected an opening weekend in the $120 million range, with more updated projections expecting closer to $150 million. At this point it seems pretty safe to say that the film will surpass the Presidents Day weekend record of $152 million, which was set by fellow Marvel superhero film Deadpool in 2016.
Black Panther is currently sitting at 97% positive on Rotten Tomatoes, and anticipation is running astronomically high for an early-year release. It remains to be seen if plans to nosedive the audience review scores will affect the hype-machine once the movie launches, but for now it’s looking like nothing can slow down this money-making juggernaut.
