It feels good to be the King. Black Panther is now officially the highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film, passing The Avengers at the domestic box office. That also means that Black Panther is now the highest-earning superhero movie of all time, narrowly surpassing such stiff competition as Howard the Duck, Tank Girl, and Steel.
Black Panther added another $17 million to its U.S. box office tally this weekend, bringing its total to $631 million. It snuck past The Avengers, which ended its theatrical run in 2012 at $623 million, back when Black Panther was barely a twinkle in its strategically marketed eye.
That also makes Black Panther the fifth highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S., coming up just shy of Jurassic World’s $652 million. After that it will need to sink Titanic’s $659 million, followed by an evisceration of Avatar (not The Last Airbender) by exceeding $760 million. Then it will be time to torpedo the current all-time U.S. box office champion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which plateaued at $936 million.
Pacific Rim: Uprising was the victor at the domestic box office this weekend, putting an end to Black Panther’s five-weekend reign by collecting $28 million. That may seem paltry compared to Black Panther’s box office domination, but the new Pacific Rim managed to pull in $122 million overseas (including $65 million in China), so all hope of profitability is not lost for the John Boyega-starring vehicle.
