No, not that Civil War. Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther has just passed Captain America: Civil War at the worldwide box office. Civil War’s total worldwide gross stands at meager (paltry, minuscule, etc) $1.15 billion, while Black Panther just passed the $1.19 billion mark this week.
Seeing how Chadwick Boseman‘s T’Challa (a.k.a Black Panther, “Destroyer of Box Office Records”) was first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Civil War, one might say that the pupil has now surpassed the teacher. Given that Civil War also featured the new Spider-Man, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Black Widow, and many other big-name box office champions, it is quite an achievement for the stand-alone Black Panther film to surpass the earnings of the third movie in the Captain America trilogy.
Next in line to be taken down by the King is the current Marvel stand-alone leader, Iron Man 3, which bottomed out at $1.22 billion. Then Black Panther will set its sights on Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.41 billion), and finally The Avengers ($1.52 billion), before it takes its rightful place on the MCU throne.
Of course, by then Avengers: Infinity War (opening April 27th in the U.S.) will begin its assault on our wallets. Soon, more box office records will tremble and fall before the (marketing) power of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
