Everyone had too much turkey this Thanksgiving holiday to go to the movies. Overall, the holiday week pulled in $125.4 million for all films released, which is 12% lower than 2021’s numbers and without covid restrictions in place.
Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continued to dominate the box office, earning $8.1 million on Thanksgiving and another $18.2 million on Friday alone. Since its release, the film is on its way to reaching over $350 million domestically.
Unfortunately for Disney, their other outing this weekend was not as lucky as Wakanda Forever. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World, which had a budget of $180 million, pulled in a measly $11.8 million for its opening weekend. Variety film critic Peter Debruge generally had positive thoughts about the film: “The world may be super-weird, but those who populate it are some of the most realistic and well-rounded that Walt Disney Animation Studios has ever presented.” However, audiences are not as amused with the film, resulting in a “B” on CinemaScore.
However, the breakout hit from the weekend is Netflix’s limited release of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The film was shown on 600 screens across the country ahead of its December 23 release on Netflix. Unfortunately, the streaming service does not release its theatrical earnings, but initial reports indicate that it could be the weekend’s top earners.
Rounding out the weekend was Sony’s World War II aviation film Devotion with $9.2 million, Searchlight Pictures The Menu earning $2 million, and Warner Bros.’ Superhero film Black Adam, pulling in an additional $4.5 million in its sixth week.
