‘Birds of Prey’ Renamed Following Poor Box Office Debut

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has returned in her own feature film, which until recently boasted the title Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn). Following poor ticket sales its opening weekend, Warner Bros. has announced it will change the film’s theatrical title to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

The film’s title refers to the all-female gang of superheroes Quinn rounds up following her breakup with The Joker (Jared Leto), aptly referred to as the Birds of Prey. Despite receiving the most positive reception of any recent DC film venture, Birds of Prey only managed to rake up $33 million its opening weekend despite analysts projecting a debut of at least $45 million.

Multiple theater apps have reflected the name change, including those of AMC and Regal Cinemas. The switch is most likely attempting to capitalize off of Harley Quinn’s name recognition, in an effort to boost SEO.

The film boasts a budget of $97.1 million, which stands on the lower side of superhero blockbusters (for reference, AvengersEndgame‘s budget reached a whopping $356 million). 2016’s Suicide Squad, the film that introduced Robbie as Quinn to audiences, had an opening weekend of $133.7 million on its budget of $175 million. The film ended up as the 10th most profitable release of the year with a worldwide gross of $746.8 million, despite scoring just a 27% on RottenTomatoes (Birds of Prey is currently at 80%).

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is screening worldwide.
