Bill Skarsgård’s Experience As Count Orlok In ‘Nosferatu’

Bill Skarsgård is a popular name in the horror genre. He is known for films such as It (2017), Barbarian, and The Crow. Now, he is playing the dreaded Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. While Skarsgård is no stranger to playing evil characters with heavy prosthetics, Count Orlok was a whole new challenge for him to tackle. In fact, he has gone on to say that he would not want to play another character like Orlok.

When we were done with it, I was like, ‘I never want to play something this evil again. I never want to put on prosthetics again.’ [Playing Orlok] really affected me. Orlok is an occult sorcerer, and it did a number on me in terms of just trying to inhabit that space. The voice was the thing I worked the hardest at. For a month-and-a-half leading up to the shoot, I didn’t do much else than just record myself. And on set, I would keep doing these exercises. It sounds kind of like Mongolian throat-singing. It’s [insane].

It will be interesting to see what Skarsgård does next after Nosferatu. Will he continue working in the horror genre? It’s hard to say. Of course, his talents are not limited to horror. For example, he appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 as the character Marquis. Whatever Skarsgård does next, we will be eagerly awaiting it.
