Summer has come and gone, which means there is a whole new season of movies about to begin. Many films with the biggest Oscar buzz release in the final quarter of the year, meaning there will be no shortage of great films to watch in the coming months. Here are just a few of the upcoming films that are worth checking out with the most buzz.
One Battle After Another is the latest film from legendary director Paul Thomas Anderson, known for films such as Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and Licorice Pizza. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall and Sean Penn. Both Anderson and DiCaprio are Academy magnets, with a ridiculous number of each of their films being nominated for Best Picture. In the film, a group of ex-revoluti0naries must band together again to save the daughter of DiCaprio’s character. It will deal withe the repercussions of how he raised her and where it got them 16 years later. One Battle After Another hits theaters in a few short weeks on September 26.
The Smashing Machine is a biopic starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Mark Kerr, a famous UFC fighter. The film is directed by Benny Safdie, who along with his brother Josh Safdie directed films such as Uncut Gems and Good Time. Now, the pair have split to work on their own projects, with Safadie releasing Marty Supreme starring Timothée Chalamet later this year. The Smashing Machine features a nearly unrecognizable performance from Dwayne Johnson, with many critics already praising it. Emily Blunt also stars in the film as Dawn Staples, so expect heavy award campaigning for both of them, as well as some attenion for Benny Safdie. The film releases in theaters on October 3.
Sentimental Value is the next outing for Joachim Trier, the director of films such as The Worst Person in the World and Thelma. It stars Elle Fanning, Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård and has made plenty of noise in critic circles. It was also the runner-up to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and has received nearly universal praise from critics. It is extremely likely to see acting nominations for this film, particularly with Elle Fanning and Stellan Skarsgård. The film will be released in theaters on October 17.
