MGM is reportedly wrapping up a deal that will make Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man) the director for the third film in the Barbershop franchise, according to Deadline. MGM was reported to be in negotiations with franchise stars Ice Cube (Ride Along), Cedric The Entertainer (Top Five) and Queen Latifah (Joyful Noise) back in March last year. Now it appears that the project is finally coming together with Lee all but sitting in the director’s chair.
Lee is best known for directing 1999’s The Best Man and its hit 2013 sequel, The Best Man Holiday. The latter’s success has made him a studio favorite as he’s also attached to a third film in the franchise, The Best Man Wedding, which is set to come out in 2016, likely before the Barbershop sequel. By pairing Lee’s success with Cube’s draw – seen most recently in last year’s Ride Along – MGM could have a hit on their hands.
The majority of the Barbershop ensemble is rumored to return, including Sean Patrick Thomas (Save The Last Dance), Eve (Whip It), and Troy Garity (Gangster Squad).
