‘Berandal’ Recieves Weapon and Fist Bearing Teaser Art

Berandal (aka The Raid 2, aka The Raid 2: Berandal, aka The Raid 2: Retaliation) the Indonesian martial-arts film by Welsh director Gareth Evans has some new official artwork out. Due out sometime in 2014, Berandal is the follow-up to Evans’ bone-breaking, skull-crushing, arm-choppingly intense action-thriller, The Raid (or, The Raid: Redemption as it’s known in the US), which was released in 2011 to much critical praise (for an action movie, at least).

Evans began his foray into the martial-arts realm of cinema with Merantau in 2009 which introduced the world to the Indonesian fighting style: pencak silat, and the film’s star fighter Iko Uwais. Uwais went on to star in The Raid as Rama, a cop who becomes trapped in an apartment complex with an army of criminals hungry for blood. Rama must hit, kick, and break his way out of the complex, in an array of spectacularly choreographed fight scenes.

Berandal will pick up right where the first film left off. After surviving the apartment complex, Rama must deal not only with Indonesian gangsters, but also a corrupt police fore, and the Yakuza.

Uwais will reprise his role from the first film; he’ll be joined by Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda (Blue Spring, Nana), Kazuki Ktamura (Godzilla: Final Wars), and Kenichi Endo (Cromartie High, Azumi 2). Also joining in on the action will be Julie Estelle, known for the Indonesian horror films The Chanting and Macabre.

The film’s art comes to us courtesy of twitch.com. The banner shows the hodgepodge of (most likely violent) characters that populate the film; including two that Evans previously spoke about: the deadly siblings, Hammer Girl (played by Estelle) and Baseball Bat Man (even Evans admits he’s not very creative with names).
