Production company Morgan Creek is in negotiations with, yet again, a new director for their untitled Tupac Shakur biopic. This time it is with music video director Benny Boom (Next Day Air), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This may be the studio’s last chance to begin production on the film, otherwise Shakur’s film rights will revert back to his mother, Afeni Shakur, at the end of 2015.
The project has gone through two main director changes already, with John Singleton (2 Fast 2 Furious) on board early on in 2014, and Carl Franklin (High Crimes) set to direct most recently.
These haven’t been the only issues that the upcoming film has faced. Multiple lawsuits have surrounded the project, one of which involved co-producers at Emmett/Furla filing a $10 million lawsuit against Morgan Creek claiming they were hiring a lead actor and setting up production schedules without their approval.
Tupac’s likeness was featured in the 2009 Notorious B.I.G. biopic, Notorious, along with this year’s N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
Boom is a seasoned music video and commercial director, winning BET Awards for video director of the year for his work with artists such as Juicy J, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne. If Boom is locked in as director, audiences can expect more updates to come through soon as Morgan Creek attempts to beat the clock on their Tupac film rights.
