The next chapter of the Karate Kid film saga is on the horizon. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film in the series will star American Born Chinese actor Ben Wang as the main character.
This selection comes from a global casting call to find the next right person for the job. 10,000 applicants applied to the call in the first 24 hours.
The decision ultimately came to picking Wang. Not only did he show a true connection to the character of this particular film, but he also has the ability to speak Mandarin and has experience in multiple martial arts.
Other than the main character, the only other details pertaining to the film’s plot is that it will take place on the East Coast of the United States and will focus on a teen from China. This has somewhat of a resemblance to the 2010 Karate Kid, where an American moves to China and finds strength through karate.
Speaking on previous movies, it has been confirmed that both Jackie Chan’s character in the 2010 film, as well as the original Karate Kid, played by actor Ralph Macchio in 1984, will be in this film.
It is also yet to be confirmed if the Cobra Kai Netflix series will play a role in this new film, which follows some of the main characters from the original Karate Kid film in the present day. The series is currently in production for its final season, according to Variety.
For fans of this martial arts universe, the new film releases Dec. 13.
