The search for a new Karate Kid has finally ended! Sony Pictures has found its newest addition to the franchise: Ben Wang. Wang is best known for his role in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese.
With over 10,000 audition submissions from across the globe in just the first 24 hours, studio insiders have revealed that Wang’s audition had standout delivery, highlighting a deep connection to the character. Additionally, his fluency in Mandarin and martial arts skills (karate, taekwondo, and more) helped him land the role.
Starring alongside Wang will be previous stars of the franchise, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio.
Currently, details about the film’s plot are being kept under wraps; however, it has been revealed that the story will take place on the East Coast and will follow a teenager from China whose life changes with the help of a martial arts mentor.
Directing the film is Jonathan Entwistle, known for his teen drama series I’m Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World, which were both released on Netflix. Writing the film’s script is Rob Lieber, known for Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day.
The film is set to be released on Dec. 13, 2024.
