The Make-Up Artist & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) has announced the nominees for the 12th annual MUAHS Guild Awards. The Penguin, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Substance, and The Deliverance lead the competition with three nods each.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice received nominations for Best Period and/or Character Make-up, Best Period and/or Character Hairstyling, and Best Special Make-up Effects. (Secret’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice “Lifesaver” commercial was also nominated for Best Make-up and Best Hairstyling.) Both The Substance and The Deliverance were nominated in the categories of Best Contemporary Make-up, Best Contemporary Hairstyling, and Best Special Make-up Effects.
Best Contemporary Make-up nominations include The Deliverance, Emilia Pérez, It Ends With Us, Smile 2, and The Substance.
In the Best Period and/or Character Make-up category, films competing with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice include Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II, MaXXXine, and Wicked.
Best Special Make-up Effects nods go to A Different Man, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Deadpool & Wolverine, The Deliverance, and The Substance.
In the Best Contemporary Hairstyling category, The Deliverance, It Ends With Us, The Last Showgirl, Megalopolis, and The Substance are all nominated.
Nominations for best period and/or character hairstyling include Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Bob Marley: One Love, Gladiator II, Shirley, and Wicked.
Winners across all 23 categories will be honored at the MUAHS awards gala on Feb. 15, 2025, at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. And, for the first time, nominations will include the addition of Broadway and international live productions. As previously announced, Emmy award-winning make-up artist Todd McIntosh, best known for his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Memoirs of a Geisha, and award-winning hairstylist Peter Tothpal, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, will receive lifetime achievement awards.
Ties in the categories of best contemporary make-up in a television series — limited, miniseries or movie for television and best hairstyling in a children’s program resulted in six nominees in each category instead of five.
