Beetlejuice 2, once thought to be a dead sequel, has now, three decades later, come to fruition. Some of the original cast will be returning, and new cast joining. Of course, Michael Keaton is returning to play Beetlejuice, and he could not be happier.
Keaton and Tim Burton are said to follow the same formula as the original movie. The two have been wanting to do the film for years. Keaton said, “We’ve both said we’re doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time. Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something.”
‘Beetlejuice is the most f**kin’ fun you can have working. It’s so fun, it’s so great. And you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie.’ Keaton adds, ‘There’s a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line- I want people to know this because I love it- tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move.’
Beetlejuice 2, also known as Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, although not the official title, hints that the plot will move the German gothic expressionist styling to the beach. The story is roughly said to be about the Deetz family buying a holiday resort in Hawaii. Upon moving there, they need Beetlejuice’s help when they awaken an ancient demon’s burial site. However, the plot has not been officially released.
The returning cast will be Keaton as Beetlejuice, Winona Ryder as Lydia, and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. It is unknown if Alec Baldwin or Geena Davis will be returning for their roles as Adam and Barbara Maitland. Jenna Ortega will be joining as Lydia’s daughter. Willem Dafoe will play the afterlife officer, and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife. Justin Theroux will be joining as well, but it is unknown what his role will be. The film is set to be released on September 6, 2024, however, there might be a new release date due to the writer’s strike. Beetlejuice 2 will be produced by Brad Pitt’s Company, Plan B Entertainment.
