“True, that’s he’s not Prince Charming.”
Disney’s live-action update of Beauty and the Beast is forthcoming. Today, the Mouse House released a snippet of Emma Watson (who portrays the Belle, the bookish inventor’s daughter who finds an unexpected connection with a prince-turned-beast) singing a few bars of “Something There.” The song – written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken – is one of the memorable tracks of the beloved 1991 animated feature. The live-action update, directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) and featuring an all-star ensemble cast, updates the fairly tale with songs intact.
In fact, as chat between Entertainment Weekly and Menken seems to confirm, this new Beauty will add a few news songs to the mix. The original animated film – the first animated motion picture to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Picture – earned Academy Awards for its original score as well as for Ashman and Menken’s title song – a track that also earned Grammy and Golden Globe prizes. Beauty and the Beast was also successfully adapted into a Broadway musical.
Opposite Watson’s “Beauty” is Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), who portrays the Beast. The cast also includes Oscar winners Kevin Kline (In & Out) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks). Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!), Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Miss Sloane), Josh Gad (Frozen), Luke Evans (High-Rise), Audra McDonald (Ricki and the Flash) and Ian McKellen (Mr. Holmes) also star.
