Barbra Streisand to Direct Catherine the Great Biopic

Catherine the Great is finally getting her long-awaited big screen treatment, and Barbra Streisand is set to direct the film about the Russian empress.

Reigning from 1762 until her death in 1796, Catherine became one of the most powerful rulers in European history.

The film will mainly follow Catherine’s marriage prior to assuming the throne and how she rose to power following her husband’s assassination.

Gil Netter (Life of Pi) has signed on to produce the biopic, and newcomer Kristina Lauren Anderson wrote the script, which achieved recognition as the best un-produced screenplay atop 2014’s Black List.

This will be Streisand’s fourth directorial effort, with the most recent being 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces. Among Streisand’s other films are 1991’s Prince of Tides and 1983’s Yentl, with all three of her films accumulating 14 Academy Award nominations. Her next musical film, Gypsy, is still in development, but is looking for new studio after Universal Pictures recently dropped it out of their upcoming slate.

We will have more on the Catherine the Great bio as updates surface.
