‘Barbie’ Director Greta Gerwig Talks Backlash And Ken

Barbie has found much success at the box office and has received an astounding amount of positive reviews for inclusion, diversity, and positive message. However, some people who are part of the right-wing political party are unhappy with the film. Gerwig tells The New York Times:

My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men. I hope that in all of that passion if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.

Gerwig also revealed how Ryan Gosling came to mind for the role. Gerwig said that Gosling gave Kenergy in a Saturday Night Live sketch and that he would be perfect for ‘Beach Ken.’ Gerwig also loved all of Gosling’s SNL sketches. She said, “You know those actors you can…just sort of feel that they know what’s funny, and I always felt that about him.”

When Gerwig wrote the part for Ken, she had Gosling in mind. They had written his name in the script as if Gerwig knew Gosling well when she had never met him. She was confident in Gosling becoming Ken, and it has paid off.
