On February 16th, the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London. In preparation for the awards, the nominations have been announced. However, the nominees aren’t what everyone expected, since many films have been left out.
Missing from the list of nominees are films like Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, and Paddington In Peru. Many expected to see these films, especially Queer and Challengers, which had both been nominated for Golden Globes previously. There is some consolation though, knowing that these films made the BAFTA longlist.
On a more positive note, the British-Irish independent film Kneecap received six nominations. This was a pleasant surprise since the film had not received any acknowledgment at the Golden Globes.
There is also good news for horror fans. Hugh Grant has received a nomination for his work in Heretic. On top of that, The Substance and Nosferatu each received five nominations. It is always a treat to see horror acknowledged in mainstream award ceremonies.
Finally, Karla Sofía Gascón made history, being the first out trans actress to receive a BAFTA film nomination for her work in Emila Pérez. This will most definitely be an awards ceremony to anticipate. With such a unique lineup of nominees, it should be a very exciting event.
