BAFTA Awards Ceremony Controversy Spurs Response From John Davidson

A moment of tension managed to break headlines during the BAFTA Film Awards. In the wake of the controversy, John Davidson, right at the center of the turmoil, has shared his stance on the matter.

The BAFTA Film Awards brought back the Sinners duo of Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo, putting the two on stage together as award presenters. Together the pair awarded Avatar: Fire And Ash, the newest chapter of James Cameron’s sprawling sci-fi epic, with BAFTA’s Special Visual Effects achievement.

In attendance at the BAFTA’s was John Davidson, a big-time advocate for Tourette’s Syndrome who seeks to educate through his own experiences with it. During the presentation, Davidson shouted a racial slur while Jordan and Lindo were on stage. Johnson has since come out to make a statement on what happened.

In their reporting of the incident, Hollywood Reporter highlighted that when it comes to Tourette’s, the actions of those affected are involuntary and sudden. Davidson himself touched upon this in his statement, explaining that he “can only add that I am and always have been deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.”

In his statement, he also expressed his immense gratitude to the BAFTA’s for announcing to the audience the nature of Tourette’s for those unaware.

“I have spent my life trying to support and empower the Tourette’s community and to teach empathy, kindness and understanding from others and I will continue to do so,” he added.
