Now almost 14 years removed, Michael Bay’s Bad Boys II won over audiences with its stylish action and, of course, the dynamic duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as wild Miami cops. Regardless that both Bad Boys installments received mediocre reviews, the love from their devoted fanbase has never let up. And considering the films’ strong box office totals, it’s only fair to presume that we would eventually see the iconic partnership on the big screen again. Thankfully, Sony answered those prayers last year when they announced the third and fourth entry in the series were in the works.
The formerly-titled Bad Boys 3 was set for release on February 17th, 2017, followed by Bad Boys 4 on July 3, 2019. However, Sony recently made the decision to push the third installment back to June 2017, with the fourth film keeping its original release. But sadly, fans will have to wait even longer now before the see Smith and Lawrence together once again. Sony announced that Bad Boys 3 will be delayed until 2018, along with giving it the new title of Bad Boys For Life.
The new name is a nod to one of the most popular quotes from the series, and it should help ease fans back into familiar territory for the sequel. It still remains to be seen what path the third film takes, particularly since Bay will only serve as a producer. Bad Boys 4 will surely be pushed back as well, so it’s only a matter of time before Sony announces just how long a wait it will be.
Bad Boys For Life opens on January 12, 2018. Bad Boys 4 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2019.
