Since its release on April 26, Avengers: Endgame wowed with masses of fans rushing to theaters, breaking all sorts of box office records. Of course viewership has inevitably decreased over time with new films filling up the screens like Detective Pikachu and John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. This hasn’t stopped Endgame from continuing to break the bank, but will it be enough to finally overpass the longstanding record for all-time biggest box office intake, Avatar?
Right now, it’s looking like a pretty close call. Worldwide, Avatar brought in a total of $2.78 billion. Endgame is right on its heels at $2.62 billion. Marvel execs have said that the ticket sales dropped much faster than they anticipated. Though the initial weekend intake was significantly larger than Avatar, Endgame‘s average decrease per weekend in 55%, while Avatar dropped at only 23%.
Domestically, Endgame has already surpassed Avatar for all-time earnings. But Star Wars: The Force Awakens still holds the top spot at $937 million, about $150 million more than Endgame’s $786 million. Predictions for the Memorial Day weekend say that Endgame will reach +$800 million by the end of the weekend, narrowing that margin even more.
It’s difficult to say if Endgame will continue to surpass its competition in either category as we move into the summer. Big blockbusters are heading into theaters in the next few weeks including Aladdin, Godzilla: King of Monsters, and Dark Phoenix, so we’ll see if the world’s favorite heroes will continue to hold their ground.
