Avatar: The Last Airbender is being made into a movie after the popular animated series. However, fans might be surprised to hear that the film will recast most or all of the original cast.
Paramount Animation, Nickelodeon Animation, and Avatar Studios are producing the new movie. The original series followed a group of children: siblings Sokka and Katara, Toph the blind earth bender, fire bender Zuko, and Aang the Avatar. Aang must learn all four elements by traveling through the nations. On his journey, he made new friends, matured, and ended the Fire Nation war by defeating Fire Lord Ozai.
The animated film has yet to be explained in detail. Still, it will occur between the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender series and The Legend of Korra. It has also been rumored that the movie will follow the characters at an older age and show how they must restore a world after the war.
What is known is that the director will be Lauren Montgomery, the producers will be co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, and the executive producer will be Eric Coleman.
It, however, has yet to be discovered who the new cast will be. The original voice actor for Toph, Jessie Flowers, discussed at MomoCon that the new film would not keep the original cast. Flowers states that the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender have specific vision and will not be swayed by the fandom. However, Flowers does state she is open to returning to the role.
One of the reasons that there would be a recast is because the characters are supposed to be in their 30s, and the voiced actors need to fit more aged group. The Avatar: The Last Airbender film will not be released until October 10, 2025 so many updates are to come.
