‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’ Carries Sleepy Weekend With $21.3 Million

The weekend box office always tends to lag in January, and despite no major studio tent poles slated for this month, holdovers from December and select smaller-scale films that took advantage of the open field. In first came Avatar in its fourth week, still going strong with $21.3 million propping up theaters until the next slate of anticipated releases in February.

Second place went to a surprise underdog with Primate, a slasher that follows a pet chimp gone mad that massacres a group of college students. Primate took home $11.3 million for its domestic opening, even with a B- CinemaScore, which isn’t unusual for horror films.

The Housemaid, another holdover, took third in its fourth week with $11.2 million, just behind Primate. Fourth was taken by Zootopia 2 with $10.1 million in its seventh week, still in the top five. Fifth went to newcomer Greenland 2: Migration, with $8.5 million rounding out the top five.

Marty Supreme took sixth this week after being in theaters for four weeks with $7.63 million, beating Anaconda in seventh after three weeks with $5.1 million.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants came in eighth with $3.8 million for its fourth week in theaters. David beat out Song Sung Blue with the former taking home $3.08 million in its fourth week and the latter with $3 million in its third week.
