American author Angie Thomas, known for her novel, The Hate U Give, is going to have her second novel, On The Come Up, adapted for the silver screen. Thomas’ first novel became a New York Times Bestseller for many weeks and was adapted into the 2018 film starring Amandla Stenberg that garnered critical acclaim.
Thomas’ novel follows Bri, a 16-year-old girl with dreams of becoming an excellent rapper who happens to be the daughter of a deceased, but once popular, underground rapper. Tension rises at school and at home when her mother loses her job and an eviction notice shows up at their door. Bri becomes the figure of controversy when she is portrayed as a hazard rather than a performer but she feels as though she has no choice other than to embrace her circumstances.
On The Come Up, officially published as of this morning, has gotten favorable reviews so far. Even before its official release, the same team and studio behind The Hate U Give confirmed development on an adaptation. George Tillman Jr. will return to direct Thomas’ film iteration of Come Up at Fox 2000 for Temple Hill Productions and State Street Pictures.
