Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has officially completed the first draft of the screenplay for the upcoming feature film adaptation of his bestselling novel Mistborn: The Final Empire. The feature project is currently in active development at Apple TV+ as part of an agreement covering Sanderson’s interconnected fantasy universe, known as the Cosmere.

Sanderson announced the milestone across his official social media channels and weekly video updates, sharing a photograph of the screenplay’s title page. The completion of the initial script draft coincides with the 20th anniversary of the novel’s original publication in July 2006. While marking a major structural milestone for the production, Sanderson noted to followers that delivering a first draft represents an early step in an extended studio development and revision pipeline.

Originally published two decades ago, Mistborn: The Final Empire launched Sanderson’s career as a solo fantasy novelist and established the foundational lore for the Cosmere. Set in a dystopian world ruled by the immortal Lord Ruler, the narrative centers on Vin, a street thief who discovers she possesses Allomantic abilities, a metal-based magic system that allows users to gain supernatural physical and mental capabilities by ingesting and “burning” specific alloys. She joins a crew led by the charismatic rebel Kelsier to attempt an overthrow of the regime.

In addition to his creator-owned work, Sanderson completed the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time book series following the passing of original author Robert Jordan in 2007. For the upcoming Mistborn feature, Sanderson serves as the primary screenwriter while maintaining executive involvement in the adaptation process. Apple TV+ will review the completed script draft prior to initiating subsequent polish passes and production scheduling.
