Auli’l Cravalho, the voice of Disney’s Moana, has been recruited to star in Netflix’s upcoming feature drama Sorta Like a Rock Star. According to Deadline, the film will be directed by Brett Haley, who is coming off the success of Hearts Beat Loud. Principal photography is slated to begin this October.
The film centers around a teenage girl who, despite an array of bad circumstances, is optimistic about the world and her role in it. She later encounters a horrible loss in her life and can no longer carry the weight of the relationships she’s created. So far, Cravalho is the film’s only formally announced casting.
Sorta Like a Rock Star will mark Cravalho’s first live-action film, as she previously held roles in animated films, save for a starring role in the NBC series Rise. Bryce Dallas Howard was initially suppose to direct the film, but drop out due to scheduling purposes.
Temple Hill Entertainment will be producing Sorta Like a Rock Star, with Marty Bowen and Isaac Klausner serving as producers. The film is based off Matthew Quick’s novel of the same title, who will have creative control over the film as an executive producer. The script has yet to be finalized.
