Deadline is reporting that Guy Ritchie‘s next film, an untitled spy thriller, is rounding out its cast with Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, and rapper Bugzy Malone. The flick stars Jason Statham, produced by Miramax and STX Films, and is set to start production next week in Qatar.
According to insiders, the film follows an MI6 agent “Orson Fortune (Statham) [who] is recruited by a global intelligence agency to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Reluctantly paired with CIA high-tech expert Sarah Fidel, Fortune sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use his charm, ingenuity and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds.”
It would seem that Plaza will play Fidel and Simmonds will be played by Elwes, though it has not been confirmed yet. Both characters seem to fit the types of characters on Elwes and Plaza’s resumes. Though, once again, nothing is confirmed on that front.
Elwes will forever be known for his role as Westley in the classic The Princess Bride, but the actor has been quite prevalent his entire career, most recently playing Mayor Larry Kline in the last season of Stranger Things.
This will be Guy Ritchie’s third film with Statham and second with Bugzy Malone, who appeared in The Gentleman in early 2020 and provided music for the soundtrack. It is unknown if Malone will have a bigger role than he did in their previous film.
Aubrey Plaza will certainly be the most exciting addition to Ritchie’s latest film. After her stint as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation, Plaza has shown off her range in vastly different projects from Child’s Play to Legion. She can do comedy, she can do drama, she can do intriguing indie films. This spy thriller will certainly be interesting to see her in.
The selling title from Toronto Film Festival was Five Eyes, but currently the flick has no set title or release date. Production does start in a matter of days and could be a fun film down the line.
