Japanese actor Haruma Miura, one of the top young film and TV stars of Japan, has passed away at 30 years old. It has been reported that Miura was found unresponsive in his Minato ward home in Tokyo on Saturday and was later pronounced dead upon arriving at a hospital. The cause of the death has not been confirmed yet, although recent investigations from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police have pointed towards a possible suicide.
Miura’s management company Amuse Inc. said in a statement to Kyodo News regarding Miura’s death: “To fans and people concerned, we apologize for the worry and the inconvenience caused, but as to details, we are still confirming and will inform you once again.”
Miura began his career in acting at the tender age of seven in 1997 in the NHK television drama Agri. He scored his first leading role in 2006 in the film Catch a Wave. From there, Miura’s film career started to skyrocket. He earned the Sponichi Grand Prix Newcomer Award at the Mainichi Film Awards in 2009 for his role in Naoko. He also won the newcomer award at the 31st Japan Academy Awards for that role.
In 2009, Miura starred in Crows Zero II with Shun Oguri, and the sequel to action flick Crows Zero.
He went on to play significant parts in movies, including the live-action adaptation of the manga “Kimi ni Todoke” in 2010. In 2011, he was in Tokyo Park and in 2019, Little Nights, Little Love.
In the popular two-part manga TV series Attack on Titan, he was most notable for taking on the lead role of Eren.
He continued his onscreen presence on television as well, most recently starring in Yonimo Kimyona Monogatari Haru no Tokubetsu-hen on Fuji TV and Gift of Fire on NHK. His next drama Love Will Begin When Money End will air in September. He had promoted that upcoming drama to his fans on Instagram three days before his death. He will also appear in the upcoming Brave: Gunjyo Senki, set to release in 2021. His latest project, The Confidence Man JP: The Movie 2 is anticipating a release in Japan on July 23.
Miura was no stranger to taking on theatrical roles. In 2016, he played Lola in the Japanese adaptation of the popular musical Kinky Boots, which won him the Haruko Sugimara Award.
He also pursued his career in music, first starting as a founder of the band Brash Brats with his fellow classmates, but the group went on hiatus in 2005. Miura released a single in 2019 titled Fight For Your Heart. Back in April, he took to Instagram to announce that he was releasing his second single, Night Diver, in the fall. It is now scheduled to be dropped on Aug. 26, 2020.
Fans on Twitter are mourning together at the loss of Miura.
