Atomic Blonde, the spy thriller starring Charlize Theron, made a splash in theaters in 2017, but rumor has it that the sequel may be streaming straight to Netflix for immediate, at-home viewing.
This is a decision that many studios are choosing for their upcoming films, now that movie theaters across the country have been shut down due the coronavirus. Nothing is set in stone for Atomic Blonde 2 yet, but this is the logical choice if the film’s creators want it to be released soon.
Not much is known about Atomic Blonde 2 yet. Charlize Theron is confirmed to return as Lorraine Broughton, a top level agent for MI6. Director David Leitch, who has had an Atomic Blonde sequel in mind since before the first movie was released, will be returning to the director’s chair as well. Leitch has even stated in the past that he would be interested in a crossover between Atomic Blonde and John Wick, the latter of which Leitch co-directed and was an inspiration on Atomic Blonde’s fight choreography. Now that a continuation is on its way, the future of the Atomic Blonde franchise rests on its distribution success amidst this new period.
When the kickass MI6 operative will be seen in action again can’t be said for now, as a release date has not been established yet. But Atomic Blonde fans may be seeing Theron on their computer screens fairly soon.
