After the coronavirus pandemic broke out, many studios were forced to delay their high profile projects with some studios opting to releasing their movies straight to VOD. One of the most high profile releases, Disney’s Artemis Fowl, was one of the first to move to streaming with the studio releasing it to their new streaming service Disney+. As it turns out, the coronavirus pandemic wasn’t the only reason the movie was moved to streaming, as the author of the book series the movie is based off of actually asked the studio to do it.
Artemis Fowl was intended to kick off a new franchise for the studio, but has been maligned by both critics and fans alike. Eoin Colfer, in an interview with Laughing Place, revealed that he supports the move, wanting the movie to reach fans as soon as possible. The acclaimed and best selling author has been eagerly awaiting for the movie adaptation of his series since he sold the rights to Disney’s Miramax label in 2000. The series has had a long road to seeing the screen, being stuck in ‘development hell’ for over 2 decades.
When taking into account how excited he was about the adaptation to how long it took to get to screen, it is no surprise that the Irish author wanted to get the movie released instead of having it delayed once again.
