Despite Terminator Dark Fate‘s disappointing opening weekend, it was far from the biggest flop at the box office. That honor would go to a little animated movie known as Arctic Dogs, which also opened this past weekend. Released by Entertainment Studios, it opened in 2,844 theaters and made about $3.1 million dollars this past weekend. This makes it not only one of the year’s biggest box office bombs but also one of the biggest box office bombs of all time.
Arctic Dogs‘ per theater average was around $1,090, though there were a few other movies from this year that had worse per theater averages. Some of these films include The Goldfinch ($1,053), The Pilgrim’s Process ($961) and Patterns of Evidence: The Moses Controversy ($254), to name a few. However, Arctic Dogs is deemed as a bigger flop due to the fact that it opened in over 2,800 and had a budget of about $50 million dollars.
This is a massive loss for Entertainment Studio and, considering this is their first theatrical animated feature, it is unlikely the studio will produce more in the future. Add in the fact that Arctic Dogs has a 14% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and its lead actor Jeremy Renner has come under fire with a recent controversy, the film will be considered one of the more infamous failures of 2019.
