Apple has picked up a filmed production of the Tony-winning Broadway Musical, Come from Away. Hasbro’s entertainment studio, eOne, will produce and finance the live filming, and the finished product is planned to release later this year on AppleTV+.
The musical tells the story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them on the morning of September 11, 2001. As time passes, uneasiness turns into trust and the two groups from wildly different cultures end up developing lasting friendships with one another.
The production is set to take place this May in New York City and will feature cast members from the Broadway production. Over 200 people, including members of the musical’s crew, staff and creative teams, will be employed for the shoot. Casting has not yet been announced.
Christopher Ashley is directing the Broadway musical with choreography from Tony nominee and Olivier Award Winner Kelly Devine and music supervision from Olivier Award winner and Grammy Award nominee Ian Eisendrath. The original production earned four Olivier Awards, five Outer Critics Circle Awards and seven Tony nominations.
Streamers have seemingly had an increased interest in live Broadway productions since Disney+ released a filmed production of the hit musical Hamilton last year. Netflix also just cast its feature adaptation of 13: The Musical.
