Take a look into a future where robots walk side by side with humans in the first trailer for Automata, releasing in theaters October 10.
The year is 2044 and robots are a necessary tool for human existence. When robots and humans alike begin to recognize consciousness in robotic life, a battle erupts between robots who believe they are more than just machines and humans who want to keep them in place.
Spanish director Gabe Ibàñez helms the sci-fi thriller, starring Antonio Banderas, who will also be seen in upcoming films The 33 and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Banderas’ ex-wife Melanie Griffith co-stars in the film along with television veteran Dylan McDermott.
There is no mistaking a similarity in theme to Ridley Scott’s cult classic Blade Runner, where artificially intelligent replicants rebel against human authority and attempt to assert their own independence and meaning. One might even suggest that the short-haired female rogue robot in the trailer is a throwback to Daryl Hannah’s Pris. With upcoming sequels to franchises that have defined the genre, such as Terminator: Genisis, Prometheus 2, and even a hotly discussed Blade Runner sequel, it should be interesting to see how Automata stands amongst the rest. It’s clear that the concept of human and machine coexistence is timeless, and becomes more and more relevant in our increasingly technological age.
