It seems that AMBI will be bringing to life the rivalry between iconic luxury car makers Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari, with Antonio Banderas portraying Lamborghini and Alec Baldwin playing Ferrari. AMBI is both producing and financing the film, which will be introduced to buyers in Cannes this year.
Based on the biography written by Lamborghini’s son, Tonino Lamborghini, called Ferruccio Lamborghini: La storia ufficiale (The official story), the film will tell the true events of the icon’s life, starting from tractors, to military vehicles, to the luxury cars he became known for. As with any icon’s image, he was stained with rumors and gossip, and his son wanted to tell the true story of his father.
Lamborghini was born into a family of grape farmers, and manufactured tractors for agriculture purposes. He then served in WWII and began to repurpose military vehicles for argricultural use, making himself a small fortune, and purchasing the ultimate luxury car of the time: a ferrari. Once he owned one, he began seeing mechanical and user issues with the car, and eventually took his complaints to Enzo Ferrari himself, who merely laughed at the rural native. Within four months, Lamborghini created his first car… and so a rivalry began. Emilia-Romagna, the region in Italy in which both men were from, is also home to the Ducati and Maserati brands of motorcycles and cars, respectively (the capital and largest city is Bologna).
Tonino Lamborghini said the following regarding the optioning of his book for a screenplay:
My book ‘Ferruccio Lamborghini: La storia ufficiale (The official story)’ is the only text perfectly respectful of the real life of my father, despite numerous legends and anecdotes written or told by other people looking for a moment of celebrity. I really believe this film can translate into images and words the great humanity of Ferruccio and transmit to the viewers worldwide my father’s personality: a man full of energy, charisma and passion.
Bobby Moresco, best known for his work in 2004 as the writer of Crash and producer of Million Dollar Baby, will be adapting the book into a screenplay. Michael Redford, best known for the 1994 film Il Postino, will be directing the feature. Il Postino garnered Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Picture, and similar to the upcoming film, took place in Italy
