Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead) next project will be writing and directing Baby Driver for Sony Pictures, with young actor Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) in talks to star, reports Variety. The story will follow a young getaway driver “who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game.” This all happens after he is coerced into working for a dangerous crime boss.
After recently dropping out as director of Marvel’s Ant-Man, this will be Wright’s first feature since 2013’s The World’s End. Known for putting his own spin on popular genres – i.e. zombies in Shaun of the Dead or the buddy-cop comedy in Hot Fuzz – it will be intriguing to see what he can do with the car chase film, aside from adding music as a plot element or casting a young actor in the driver’s seat.
This move should be a great step in what has been a steady rise for Elgort since his breakout role just over a year ago in the Carrie remake. He has since starred in the popular YA adaptations The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent series, as well as in Jason Reitman’s drama Men, Women & Children. His next trip to the silver screen will be on March 20 when Divergent sequel Insurgent hits theaters. He is also expected to star in the biopic Van Cliburn and reunite with Carrie co-star Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick Ass) for November Criminals.
