Director Sean Baker’s Anora is well on its way to becoming his biggest hit, and it’s still only showing in just 34 locations domestically.
After two standout weekends, Anora has maintained its position as the top film in the country in per-theater averages, consistently outperforming the wide-release title Venom: The Last Dance. The movie has also seen success in Russia, likely boosted by its New York setting within the Russian community and its cast of actors with Russian heritage. These factors have helped the film pass another box office milestone, just over three weeks into its limited release.
With nearly $1.9 million domestically and an additional $1.2 million from international markets, Anora has reached the $3.1 million mark worldwide. Of this total, about $1.1 million has come from Russia, where the film is playing on over 1,000 screens. Anora set the record for the highest per-theater average of the year during its debut weekend, generating $91,000 across just six locations and maintained momentum in its second weekend with a PTA of around $26,000.
Anora premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first American production since Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life to win the prestigious Palme d’Or. The romantic comedy-drama stars Mikey Madison as the titular character, a stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. Baker’s previous film, Red Rocket, also premiered in competition at Cannes and received significant praise for Simon Rex’s portrayal of a former adult film star.
Baker’s biggest hit remains The Florida Project, his only film to surpass $10 million globally. Domestically, it grossed about $6 million and reached over 400 locations at its peak. Anora is already his second-highest-grossing film and is expected to expand further during awards season. The film holds a near-perfect 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it a strong Oscars contender.
Anora expanded to more international territories this past weekend.
