Emerging filmmaker Shane Carruth has wrangled quite an impressive cast for his next film, which will be a sea adventure called The Modern Ocean. Leading the ensemble is Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway (The Intern), Keanu Reeves (Knock Knock), and Daniel Radcliffe (Horns). Also joining them is Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day) along with young stars Chloe Grace Moretz (If I Stay), Abraham Attah (Beasts of No Nation breakout), the newly-minted Spider-Man Tom Holland (The Impossible), and his former Peter Parker contender Asa Butterfield (Hugo).
FilmNation is currently shopping the project to foreign investors this week in Santa Monica at the American Film Market. Carruth’s 200-page script, boasting of many diagrams and pictures, follows the cutthroat trading routes of the high seas, spanning from the markets of ancient Algeria to the bottom of the ocean floor. The story will tell an epic adventure of the battles for strategic shipping lanes and precious cargo being imported and exported.
Carruth’s first film, Primer, won Sundance‘s coveted Grand Jury Prize back in 2004 as well as the Alfred P. Sloane Feature Film Prize. He has since mainly focused on short films, but now will be making a huge transition with The Modern Ocean and its expansive subject material. It will also be interesting to see where is he going with the abundance of young actors in the cast.
Hathaway will next be seen in Alice Through the Looking Glass and the monster film Colossal. Reeves is on board for John Wick 2 and Nicholas Winding Refn‘s The Neon Demon, while Radcliffe has several projects including Victor Frankenstein and Now You See Me 2 on the horizon.
We will have more on The Modern Ocean as details are released.
